RAIN IS GOLD

#Bloganuary Day 7

Write a short story or poem about rain.

Where I come from, rain is gold. Rain is a rear commodity that the whole community waits for. While children will be happy the farmers will be filled with joy.

Everyone knows when rain is coming. The ants (thingii) and other insects are busy carrying extra food in their stores. Birds sing melodies that win oscar awards. Calves and baby goats will be making high jumps all over the compound. From a distance, you can hear the donkey’s hee-haw. It’s just a season you can’t expect to miss

A night before it rains, grama will bring outside the big drum, backet, and anything that can catch water. On the other hand, young men will sharpen the plough ready to hit the ground first thing when the rain seises the following day.

That night we will have our sweaters on and a little bit of heavy blankets on. During the rainy season, it tends to be cold. Before bed uncle will be asked to check if our beds are direct to where the roof licks and the bed will be moved to the other side just in case.

“It’s raining” you will hear the whispers early in the morning. As the drops of rain land on the rooftop one after another. We cuddle on our beds and we take one more minute nap just to be asked to wake up to get the cows ready to plough.

In the afternoon we will go to the river to swim. It would have been after a long time since we are seeing such a mass of water so we take the advantage of washing clothes and bendings that have been used for ages since the last rainfall.

Dancing in the rain was a big deal but also singing those traditional songs was more of a big deal. Then when we catch a cold we will be brought near the coal fire to keep warm as grandma makes a nice pot of porridge that feeds the whole household. Mine was the pot after everyone gets their serving. Each scoop of that porridge could take you to cloud nine even when it was sugarless.

Rain remains gold in many parts of Africa today, how I wish I can carry some of the rain we experience here in the Caribbean.
