Little Memories

#Bloganuary Day 3

What is the earliest memory you have?

One resolution I have for this year is to create little memories that will act as an anchor in times when I face turbulence in the sea of life. I for sure know it is not going to be easy but in all circumstances, I will try to be gentle with myself for I am marvelously created and at the same time, I am a work in progress.

One little memory that I have, is when I was still under ten years of age. From the city to the countryside during the Christmas season, is something I look forward to every year. It was the only time I could spend time with grandma, my sisters, and my cousins.

When you visit ‘Susu’, on Sunday morning you have to be up early to attend church. It was the culture of the community we lived in for children to attend Sunday school. They kept it earlier before the main service just to allow the young stars to have a share of their own before the main service.

I vividly remember one bright Sunday morning the facilitator asked us what we were grateful for that week and while every other child was giving answers I raised my hand, good disciplined city boy as many of them considered me. The teacher spotted me and asked me to talk. This is what I said, “Grandma gave me butterfat”. The whole class roared with laughter. My face was dead serious while they all jingled and kept smiling faces looking at me. The teacher bigged me up and the class continued.

From that day henceforth I have learned to be grateful for small things in my life. In the city, we did not have butterfat and for the rest of the children, it was a normal thing to have. I also learned then and there never to take things for granted.

  1. That was honest and sure meant so much to you. Butter in the village was surely rare, and your grandma wanted you to feel special. She was a very sweet lady. Just like your mom 😊
