A QUIET GOODBYE

Reflection by fr.JLucas on Matthew 4:12, 17, Jan 25, 2026

In today’s Gospel, Jesus begins His mission quietly. John has been arrested. The moment is not ideal. The place is not important. Yet Jesus steps forward and says simply, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” From that moment, lives begin to change.

This photo was taken at Our Lady of Visitation children’s home in Nairobi, Ruai Choka during my visitit March 2025.

This Gospel always reminds me of my own calling moments—those quiet “follow me” experiences that did not happen on a big stage, but in small and hidden places. I come from a little inner city in Nairobi—Kayole Ndogo, somewhere in Maringo. A month after my come-and-see program with the Missionaries of the Poor, I chose to join them in their work among the poor. I remember leaving my mother, holding my sister’s daughter, Mdem – Angela Monthe, crying as she watched me go. There were no speeches, no applause—just a simple yes, and a painful goodbye.

Jesus first found me at Our Lady of Visitation, where I served as an altar boy. I wanted to become a priest then, but Christ chose to begin my mission among the poor. God often starts great things in small and hidden places.

I was not highly educated. I did not have influence or a high IQ. Yet Jesus chose fishermen—Peter and Andrew, James and John. Ordinary men. Hard-working men. Men used to uncertainty, risk, and patience. Perhaps Jesus saw in them what He still looks for today: humility, perseverance, availability, and openness.

The call has not changed.
The voice is still gentle.
The invitation is still simple.

May we have the courage to leave our nets, walk toward the Light, and live in unity in Christ.
