Matthew 7:12 – do to others what you would have them do to you
Despite the devastation of Hurricane Melisa, Today I went to work with the Brother of the Missionaries of the poor. I was able to help cut residence nails. I had a chat with them and I got a chance to feed my little sister. My main purpose for going to the Lord’s place was to nurse the wound. I wanted to bring hope to Jay who seemed tired of life with lots of medications to take every day.
Jay Jay (not his real name) is a patient and a resident at the Lords Place C 13. He has a bad bed sore on his buttocks and he feels ashamed to be nursed by the brothers who could be his own young brother or big brother. Looking at his skinny legs and arms … many parts of his body filled with sours, he wonders if he’ll have a fleshy body again. He gets frustrated and so aggressive. Many other times he gets stubborn to take his medication to boost his immune and fight the infection.
I went with a compassionate heart but also with lots of love for I know Jay from his former home owned by Mustard Seed (Matthew 25) whom I also work with. Today I begged and requested that he’d be willing for us to nurse him and he cooperated. The nurse brother who was working with me thought I bribed Jay to accept the service but it was just my way of talking to him.
The wound is big and so it was not an easy task for he felt pain in every part of his body. He has no flesh left but we managed to nurse the wound and it was left dry and clean.
When we finished he requested I stretch his legs slowly and he said “today I feel so good.” I went home happy and grateful for that little chance I got to serve humanity but also to serve my own brother, my own Jamaican family in that small way.
As I reflect on my day’s activities I also learned that …
In life, you need three things:
— Humility, to never think you’re better than anyone else.
— Courage, to face whatever life throws your way with dignity.
— Wisdom, to stay silent when confronted with someone’s foolishness.
