MAKE A CALL TO GOD

~ kaka Lucas, 16th June 2022

Making calls and connecting with people has been made easy in our world today. You can just dial a number and in a minute, you are talking to someone in Europe. It’s been made so easy that you can now see them, only that you cannot touch them. Isn’t that not easy?

But wait…..How many contacts do you have in your phone book?

Of all the contacts that you have, is there any way that you contact God the same way you do with those in your phone book?

It’s so different from the beginning of time. God allowed us to connect with Him through prayer, but, as easy as it is, in that you don’t need a gadget to call God, we find it hard to pray. As easy as it is that we don’t need credit, internet or even network to call God, we do not find time, space and even words to call and talk to God.

Do you know how to pray?
When do you pray?
Where do you pray from? or should I ask,
How do you pray?
What do you pray for?

I would say I know how to pray, but I am not sure if I usually pray. I pray all the time and anywhere, with anybody, but I find myself lacking words and expression to pray sometimes.

I met B on my Snapchat a few weeks ago. We were chatting for some time before we contacted each other on another app and started calling. Over the last few weeks, before B goes to bed, we always prayed, thanking God for the day and the company we share as God’s chosen one. I find it weird that we are drawing close to each other through prayer in this generation. I can confidently say that it is possible to pray anytime, anywhere, with anyone. It is just a matter of choice. (Imaginary story)

Today I was watching this movie titled “Evans Almighty” on Netflix. I took a note of a very ordinary prayer the man prayed as the show foundation was being laid. By the way, Evans Almighty is a family comedy based loosely on the Bible story of Noah’s Ark. Children over five who enjoy stories that involve animals, slapstick comedy and toilet humour will find the film particularly appealing. The main message from this movie is that an individual has the power to change the world through one act of random kindness. The movie is so family oriented that it would help us with our families, reminding us how it feels about things such as the responsibility that comes with a position of power, the notion of being ‘successful, powerful, handsome and happy’, and what families can do to be close together. (The above paragraph is not 100% my words)

At the beginning of the movie, a lot was happening until the part where Evans was having a chat with his wife while they were in bed. They had a new life ahead of them. A new car and a new house. Definitely a new residential place that they now lived with their children.

This is how the conversation went …… (I found it interesting and so should you) …

Joan: Ryan (their last born) did the cutest thing. He asked if we could pray together.
Baxter: Really? What did you pray about?
Joan: … Jordan prayed for good visibility, good weather on the hiking trip tomorrow.
……. Do you want to know what I prayed for?
Baxter: Yeah! What did you pray for?
Joan: I prayed we could become closer as a family.
What did you. (She asks Baxter) pray for?
Baxter: Me? I don’t know. Praying just ….. (sighing)
Joan: Honey, you are the one who said you wanted to change the world. It’s a pretty big job.

After this Joan went to bed and Baxter was left watching TV. The clip that was playing on TV was him convincing the crowd how he will change the world. It comes to an end and even though he wanted to sleep, he slipped of and knelt beside the bed, held his hands together like a good boy, just as those holy angels you see in portraits, hands held together in a praying mode.
…….. This is where the meat of the matter lies…… when Baxter decided to pray.

Baxter: Hello there (he must have been talking to God straight as if He was just beside him … you can just imagine) ….. he continued ….
Hi!
This is Evans Baxter. I just want to say thank you for everything. Thank you for the new car and for the new house ….. the house is great. I love it. I mean, I picked it out, but you created matter and everything so ….. (just imagine the look on his face while conversing).
I just wanted to say that I think Joan makes a good point, and that I am now in a position of great power, and I know that with great power comes great responsibility. So, God, (he clears his throat) please help me change the world.
Okay, that’s it. I’m hanging up now.
God bless ….. well, You. Okay!”. Then Baxter concluded his prayer and went to bed.

Just say it the way you know and feel. He’ll listen and He’ll answer.

I found this conversation with God amazing. Nothing extra. Nothing too fancy. Just a casual talk with God Himself.
How do you converse with God when you get the time to?

Like Baxter, we all may be in that situation when we really don’t know how to pray, when to pray or even what to pray for. But when that moment comes that we slip off our beds and kneel to catch up with reality, we end up just saying it all without any sugar coating. We end up just talking to God as a friend; we are sure He will listen.

I believe this is the reason Jesus asked us to go in our inner rooms, close ourselves and pray, and God who sees in secrets will for sure answer our prayer.

Prayer is a struggle to many men as well as women. But it can be cultivated, worked up on and it can become a habit that will draw us close to each other and to God. Maybe this is the moment to take the challenge and begin to converse with God just as we would with a joyful, loyal, and loving friend.

Just as we all have thousands of contacts in our phone, half of which we do not talk to, let us add that contact of heaven, our heavenly home. Let us have a moment to just hang out with God on a call. Talk, laugh, cry and sometimes just be there. He wants nothing much than just you.

Perhaps get a book where you can text God every evening. Say what you have to say in writing and in the future, remind Him of what you spoke about. When things come to pass remember to say, thank you……if they do not come to pass, remind Him gratefully for what has already passed.

When you get that time to call God, please do not forget me in your prayers.
