“Good Ting Dem”

What is the purpose of comfort?

Ding Dong ( https://youtu.be/93luuWeDQo4) in his song tells the society they should have the good things, good watch, good car, good house and good woman dem! The good ting dem as he calls them, this is what our society is being encouraged to have to live comfortable life.

We all want to be comfortable, have everything as we plan and dreamt about, everything where we can reach by a click of a finger. But for real……is it that cool, is that what we should be longing for as a generation?

What is the purpose of comfort? A question we may all jump to answer or even avoid depending with the very life we are living at the moment. As it is said, comfort is what I’ll call, pain killer. It helps us break through pain, suffering, distress and face tough experience with courage. Actually comfort is to me “refueling” of our life. Just as we all may have time to go for vacation while others would retreat to quiet places to reflect, so is comfort, it draws us to preparation chamber, where we are  prepared to face the challenges that come our way and opportunities of life when they avail themselves.

Just like a coin 🪙 , comfort has two sides. And neither of each side is good to stay too long. The moment we are comfortably settled in either side, comfort shifts it’s meaning from that which strengthens us to that which weakens us. Matthew K. states in his book that, “ Comfort is a beautiful servant, but an ugly master.” (read it again until you understand)

Too much of being comfortable leads to loving it and seating on it warmly. This love of comfort is poisoners pill 💊 to the soul. It brings down our ability to listen and to hear the truth and rails our lives with it.

As we all know, truth is a bitter herb,  herb  that is uncomfortable swallowing. That which will free us is bitter and painful, that which we turn our face from because it’s bitter should be what we take with both hands.

Comfort doesn’t allow us to have a chat with ourselves in a real honest sense and therefore leading us not to be able to have hard conversations with others. Comfort adores itself with self-interest. It provides us with false security. Comfort is comfortable but we have to make a choice to enjoy both sides wisely and comfortably. It takes a comfortable man to step on both sides of comfort once at a time comfortably.

  1. Very true Brother Lucas. Thank you for you sharing. We often do not consider the downside of comfort. We are always grabbing for more not realizing that we grow/mature through our challenges, through our times of discomfort. Again, thank you for the reminder. Continue to share the wisdom of God.
