Jamaican sa-it-deh Soup

I just love it in Jamaica. We have scheduled meals from Monday to Sunday. One of my exciting meals in a week is Saturday soup. Initially I didn’t like it for soup back home is for those who are sick and the mothers who have delivered. Back home soup is also for older men and this soup is made of bones. In kikuyu we call it (thuvu wa mahidi ). Just the aroma alone turned me off because it just smell raw meat.

When I come to jamaica I found they had a Saturday meal called soup and at first I thought it was the same soup from back home. It took me a while to start taking soup seriously until when I found out it was chicken and beef or even pork.

So it is called Saturday soup, sa-it-deh soup because it is always cooked on Saturday. Today I made split pea and beef, sweet potato, yarm, garlic anything I come I across including a nice big hot Pepe.

Saturday soup is common especially for Jamaican after a long morning shopping and market so soup would be the easiest meal to have after long morning.

We have different type of soup in Jamaica and every occasion there is special soup. You can’t mitt funeral soup and wedding soup. In Jamaica we are specific and no mix up, mix meal.
